Mindanao RAC Meeting cum Field Exposure Deepened Understanding of BCSD Issues

Posted on November 7, 2012

RAC Mindanao gave a thumbs down to mining in eastern Mindanao. Mining strips off vegetation of natural forests which are habitat of the endangered Mangkuno or Philippine ironwood.

Ten members of the Regional Advisory Council (RAC) and FPE regional unit staff in Mindanao gathered for a meeting and field exposure last September 19-21, 2012 in Caraga region. This enabled RAC to learn pressing issues and concerns besetting the different bioregions in Mindanao; review the results of the Regional Consultative Group meeting, the Mindanao Regional Environmental Agenda, and RAC roles and guidelines; affirm the RAC resolutions made during their May 17 meeting; and visit FPE project site and mining operations in Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. A fun-filled visit to Bucas Grande and Sohoton Caves concluded the three-day packed activity.

RAC Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao meet bi-annually to discuss policy issues and recommend policies for program development and governance, share updates on current issues in their respective regions, and make plans and actions vis-á-vis FPE’s regional environmental agenda. Exposure activities such as this strengthen their role as policy advisers to the FPE Board.
