FPE Launches Year-long Events in Celebration of its 25th

Posted on January 30, 2017

The Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) continues to celebrate connectedness through conservation in its 25th year, via a series of national and regional events, which were launched last January 15, 2017. FPE remains true to its vision of fostering partnerships for the conservation of our natural resources, and the sustainable development of local communities.

Since its founding in 1992, FPE has fostered partnerships for the environment by building constituencies and capacities of thousands of people’s organizations, indigenous people’s organizations, faith-based, and non-government organizations. It has engaged government agencies, local government units, private sector, and other funding agencies—both local and international—to promote responsive policies and actions for BCSD.

In the first quarter, FPE aims to highlight the significance of and urgency for the protection of wetlands, marine mammals and fisheries, and forests. In partnership with DENR, FPE will publish the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, a national roadmap in conserving and managing the country’s natural resources. FPE will gather its local partners in order to broaden support on initiatives of indigenous peoples in Cordillera in the third week of February, and promote regional partnerships in Mindanao in March.

FPE will continue to support Earth Day activities in April and the International Day of Biodiversity in May, through a fun run and biodiversity photography contest in the second quarter of this year. In June, FPE will launch a series of regional events to put spotlight on environmental challenges and at the same time solidify local actions to address these challenges. Rainforestation and other forest rehabilitation activities will also commence in this period.

In the third quarter, FPE will intensify activism among young leaders through a youth conference, celebrate indigenous traditions, and renew partnerships through various environmental celebrations in the Visayas. The FPE Mindanao Regional Unit will continue to rally for conservation projects, through a roadshow in July. FPE will convene the annual national stakeholders meeting in August, where the Regional and National Environmental Agenda will be refined, as a result of regional consultations of experts, community leaders, private sector, academe, and the government. That same month, FPE will recognize community partner-grantees who have demonstrated exemplary work and generated best practices on issues such as mining, climate change, and land conversion.

In recognition of the power of the media to move and draw attention on important environmental challenges and compelling success stories of people and communities, the 3rd Sarihay Media Excellence Awards will be held in September. Entry form and announcements will be announced in February.  Relevant and effective biodiversity conservation and ecosystems knowledge and innovations will also be showcased in a biodiversity conference in Catanduanes in the same month.

In the fourth quarter, FPE celebrates the resilience of communities by honoring unsung heroes and environmental defenders in the face of both natural and man-made disasters. FPE will continue to rally for the conservation of our biological resources especially coastal ecosystem and fisheries, and promote sustainable and self-sufficient farming.

FPE invites you to be a conservation partner—join us in these events, which are learning opportunities not only for the Foundation, but for its constituencies and the general public.
