Establishment of an MRF and Demonstration Site for Composting and Eco Park Development

  • Proponent: Santo Niño de Cebu Augustinian Social Development Foundation
  • Amount: 80,000.00
  • Project Start Date: April 17, 2012
  • Project End Date: October 17, 2012
  • Grant Type: Advocacy Grants
  • Area: Visayas
  • Grant Status: Past

Project Goals and Objectives

  1. To complete two of the originally proposed objectives of:

  • creating and starting up the composting facility

  • completing a joint parish and consultant design and development plan for the nursery and eco-park

  1. Plus, to expand the participation & commitment on the project through

  • creating a pilot group of households willing to join the parish in becoming a demo in establishing a SWM methodology (Takakura or another methodology) and growing their own natural gardens

  • building strong capability and a “learning community” within and among the households and the parish

  • engaging other sectors in society, LGU and other government agencies included, in supporting and participating in this expanded program

  • designing, bringing in resources and facilitating 1-day workshops on SWM, nursery planting and the eco-park

Outputs and Outcomes

After two ocular visits and several interviews with the parish priest and the president of the Parish Pastoral Council of Mohon Parish and two of the CUSW advisers, here is what we gleaned to be what was implemented since the beginning of this project.

  • Orientation and demonstration of Takakura (2 sessions)

  • Session on Composting

  • Planning workshop for Eco-Park

  • Construction of Composting Facility

Several steps originally conceived did not come to pass for the following reasons:

  • The preparation time and process needed to bring about inner motivation and drive in the parishioners to do the necessary follow-up work was not adequate

  • Tasks were not as clearly defined and assigned a point person as they needed to be

  • Concentration of the project on just the parish left the project vulnerable

  • Major transition in key personnel (such as the parish priest and the head of SNAF) were/are afoot and this presents a problem in gaining and giving real commitment to a project
