[2012] Resource and Socio-Economic Assessment of the Binalbagan River in Negros Island

This research project was spearheaded by the Silliman University’s Center for Tropical Conservation Studies (CENTROP) with the aim of assessing and characterizing the Binalbagan River - the longest river and a critical watershed of Negros Island in Western Visayas - and its riparian zone.

The Binalbagan River is the longest river and a critical watershed of Negros Island in Western Visayas. Headwaters of the river can be found in Negros Oriental, in the hinterlands of the municipalities of Vallehermoso, La Libertad, and Guihulngan, and also in Canlaon City. 

This research project was spearheaded by the Silliman University’s Center for Tropical Conservation Studies (CENTROP) with the aim of assessing and characterizing the Binalbagan River and its riparian zone (the interface between land and a river or stream). The assessment concentrated on the watershed’s physico-chemical and biological characteristics, the socio-economic profile of inhabitants along its riverbanks, and the associated health and ecological vulnerabilities and risks in the area. 

The baseline information was gathered to satisfy a DENR prerequisite in formulating a management plan for the Binalbagan River. CENTROP partnered with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of Negros Occidental for the research project.
