Description: The fourth largest and the deepest lake in the Philippines, Lake Mainit supports an important fishery, which is a major source of livelihood of the communities surrounding it. Situated within the Caraga administrative region, the lake is in close proximity to several mining operations, which is thus also addressed in FPE’s biodiversity conservation efforts in the area.

Biogeographic Features

  • Lake Mainit is the fourth largest freshwater lake in the country and the second largest in Mindanao

  • It has an approximate area of 17,340 hectares, a recorded depth of about 168 meters and a shoreline of about 59 kilometers long.

  • The lake is bisected by the boundaries of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Norte, and falls within the jurisdiction of four municipalities; Jabonga and Kitcharao in Agusan del Norte; and Alegria and Mainis in Surigao del Norte.
